Odisha to Hold Student Union Elections After Nine-Year Hiatus

Bhubaneswar, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : After nearly nine years, Odisha is set to revive its student union elections. Higher Education Minister Surya Banshi Suraj announced that the state government has approved the elections for the 2026-27 academic year, with voting scheduled for October 15. This event is seen as a historic and significant opportunity for the student community.

Suraj explained that notifications regarding the elections will be issued by all colleges on October 7, followed by the nomination process on October 9. The elections will then take place on October 15.

He emphasized that today’s students will lead society in the future. Therefore, student union elections serve as a crucial platform for them to gain direct experience in democratic processes and leadership. The prolonged absence of student leadership in campuses has hindered the representation of student voices in policy discussions.

The minister highlighted the importance of reflecting student perspectives in policies, from the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) to practical initiatives like internships. Following the elections, students will have the chance to voice their concerns and suggestions democratically, marking a significant step toward preparing future leaders.

Addressing concerns about law and order during the elections, Suraj stated that maintaining peace is the government’s responsibility. He stressed that it is inappropriate to use law and order as an excuse to suspend student elections or deny students their rights. The administration must ensure that the election process is conducted peacefully, without infringing on the democratic rights of students.

Suraj urged student organizations and all participating candidates to engage in a free and fair election process. He encouraged students to actively participate in democracy while avoiding any violence during the elections. The winning candidates will become leaders of the student community and play vital roles in future societal leadership.

He concluded by stating that student union elections are not just about securing positions; they also provide an opportunity for students to experience democracy, leadership, and responsibility.
