
New Delhi, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : Finland and India have seen a remarkable strengthening of ties this year. In an interview, Finnish Ambassador Mikko Kivikoski noted that activities between the two nations have reached record levels, with collaboration expanding across political, trade, innovation, and environmental sectors. He emphasized, “Finland has the power of innovation, while India possesses abundant talent. If we work together, great achievements are assured.”
Discussing the relationship, Kivikoski remarked on the significant bilateral activities this year, including visits from both the Finnish Prime Minister and President to India. Additionally, he highlighted India’s participation in the India-Nordic Summit held in Oslo, along with visits by India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce Minister to Finland. These interactions signal a deepening partnership.
Kivikoski also referenced the recent World Circular Economy Forum in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, which showcased joint efforts between the governments of India and Finland in environmental sustainability and development.
On the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union, the ambassador expressed optimism that signatures could be finalized by year-end. He explained, “After signing, it will need approval from both the Indian government and the EU.” He anticipates that this process may take several months, with hopes for the agreement to be implemented next year, which could significantly enhance trade relations between India and the EU.
When asked about India’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Kivikoski praised India’s approach, stating, “Absolutely, dialogue is essential for resolution.” He added that Finland values India’s efforts and views its role in promoting diplomatic solutions positively.
Both nations are confident about the potential for collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), defense, education, and innovation. Kivikoski described the complementary capabilities of both countries, stating, “Finland may be small, but its capacity for innovation and solutions is substantial. Meanwhile, India has vast talent and human resources. Together, we can achieve significant milestones.”
He highlighted the unique characteristics of the Finland-India partnership, combining Finland’s technical expertise and innovative capacity with India’s large market and skilled youth. The growing interactions between the two countries are expected to create new opportunities in AI, clean technology, circular economy, education, and defense.
The relationship between Finland and India is not limited to political engagement; both nations are collaborating in areas that will directly impact future economies, technologies, and societies.
