Madhya Pradesh Expands Air Services to Enhance Connectivity

Bhopal, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : The expansion of air services in Madhya Pradesh is steadily progressing, with the state currently boasting eight airports, a number that is expected to rise to ten soon. This initiative aims to improve air connectivity for residents while bolstering access to emergency services, tourism, and healthcare through a network of airports, airstrips, and helipads under the Civil Aviation Policy-2025.

The state’s international flight connections are also increasing. Indore has established air links with Dubai and now Abu Dhabi. Preparations are underway to expand the Datana-Matana Airport in anticipation of the Singhast-2028 event. The development of new airports, the construction of permanent helipads in all assembly constituencies, and the introduction of PM Shri Air Ambulance and PM Shri Helicopter Tourism services are making air travel more accessible and comprehensive in the region.

Currently, Madhya Pradesh has eight operational airports, over 20 airstrips, and 220 helipads. Major airports in operation for the 2023-24 period include Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Gwalior, and Khajuraho. By 2024-25, the number of airports will rise to eight with the addition of Rewa, Datia, and Satna. Development projects are also underway for airports in Ujjain and Shivpuri. Plans are in motion to establish an airport every 150 kilometers, an airstrip every 75 kilometers, and a helipad every 45 kilometers to further expand air services across the state.

There is a comprehensive plan to develop permanent helipads in all 230 assembly constituencies. The central government is processing approvals for the development of five new airports, with a priority on Singrauli. Additionally, under the Udaan scheme, there is a proposal to develop ten airstrips into airports, including those in Singrauli, Sagar, Neemuch, Chhindwara, Mandla, Khandwa, Ratlam, Mandsaur, Umaria, and Shahdol.

Since May 29, 2024, the PM Shri Air Ambulance service has been operational, offering free air transport to Ayushman cardholders to government and affiliated hospitals both within and outside the state. Non-Ayushman beneficiaries can also access free transport to state government hospitals and designated rates for services outside the state.

Transport requests will require approval from district collectors for in-state transport and from the Director of Medical Education for out-of-state transport. For paid cases, services are provided based on availability through the Health Services Directorate. So far, 186 patients and accident victims have benefited from this service.
