The Musical Journey of Sadhana Sargam: From Childhood Recordings to Stardom

New Delhi, March 7: The music industry has seen many talented artists, but few have made a mark like Sadhana Sargam. Known for her melodious voice, Sadhana has gifted the film world with numerous unforgettable songs. However, many are unaware of the intriguing stories behind her name and career.

Sadhana Sargam holds a special place in Indian film music. Her voice has touched the hearts of generations. In a candid interview, she shared insights about her musical journey, the story behind her name, her mentors, inspirations, and the challenges she faced early on. She revealed that her name, “Sadhana Sargam,” was not a mere coincidence but a result of her parents’ foresight and the suggestion of renowned composers Kalyanji-Anandji.

“My real name is Sadhana Ghanekar. My parents chose the name Sadhana to remind me that the pursuit of music should never end,” she explained. During a program in Shimla, Kalyanji-Anandji suggested that while Sadhana Ghanekar was a nice name, it lacked a musical touch. They recommended adding “Sargam,” and she agreed immediately. Since then, she has been known as Sadhana Sargam in films and beyond.

Sadhana credits her early musical education to her mother, Neela Ghanekar, and later to the legendary Pandit Jasraj, from whom she learned classical music. “Learning from Pandit Jasraj was a matter of great pride for me. I trained under Kalyanji-Anandji for about 10-11 years,” she said.

Music has always been a part of her life. She began singing at the age of four, influenced by the classical music atmosphere at home, as her mother conducted music classes. Initially, she aspired to be a classical singer. She received a Central Government scholarship to study under Pandit Jasraj but eventually shifted towards playback singing. “Both fields are challenging. Singing a perfect three-minute song is as tough as performing three hours of classical music,” she noted.

Her first recording took place at just five years old with Vasant Desai, where she insisted on bringing her doll along for a song based on a Marathi poem. She also spoke about the song “Humko Man Ki Shakti Dena” from the film ‘Guddi,’ which provided her the opportunity to showcase her talent to Kalyanji-Anandji.

When discussing her inspirations, Sadhana mentioned legends like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, and Mohammed Rafi. “Listening to their voices shows how high singing can soar. Lata once said that hitting the right notes is the essence of expression. I listen to their songs repeatedly and learn from them,” she shared.

Despite coming from a Marathi family, she studied Urdu with Maulvi Syed Ahmed Syed to perfect her Hindi-Urdu pronunciation. This preparation gave her the confidence to sing alongside Dilip Kumar in projects like ‘Kalinga.’ Sadhana stated that she has not faced major obstacles in her career due to consistent guidance, but she often feels dissatisfied with her progress and believes she should have achieved more. Her goal is to create music that brings peace and helps people forget their stress.

“I aspire to be a better human being than just a good singer, and I want to help others through music,” she expressed. Even today, she practices daily and ensures her dedication to music never wanes.
