Patna: Neeraj Kumar, the national spokesperson of JD(U), expressed candid views on several issues, including government policies, democracy, and social balance. He addressed the restrictions imposed on wearing hijabs, masks, and helmets in jewellery shops, the slogans raised at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and the upcoming ‘Dahi-Chooda’ event scheduled for January 14.
On the ban of hijabs, masks, and helmets in jewellery stores, Neeraj Kumar stated that traders’ associations have no right to interfere if a woman covers her face for religious or cultural reasons. He emphasized that such matters do not concern public order, morality, or health.
He questioned the legal basis for such restrictions, pointing out the absence of any government notification or official order. Citing an example, he said if a person has undergone a kidney transplant and wears a mask on medical advice, would they be denied entry into shops? He highlighted that while masks are currently being banned, soon helmets might also be questioned, especially during winters when people carry helmets for safety. Neeraj Kumar stressed that safety is important but arbitrary restrictions are unacceptable.
Regarding the slogan shouting incidents at JNU, he remarked that democracy allows space for dissent, but everyone must maintain dignity and decorum. He acknowledged the legal right to file review petitions against judicial decisions but criticised repeated slogans that disrupt the environment and politicise the issue, saying such behaviour is not in line with the traditions of a prestigious institution like JNU.
Speaking about the ‘Dahi-Chooda’ programme on January 14, Neeraj Kumar revealed that Lalu Prasad Yadav is unwell and has undergone cataract surgery. He noted that Tejashwi Yadav is not politically active at the moment. In this context, he commended Tej Pratap Yadav, who, despite being educated and having lost elections, has not lost courage and has taken the initiative to organise the event.
He suggested that the event could be held at Mahua Bagh or Kautilya Nagar to allow workers to attend and to ensure clarity regarding the property involved.
