Chennai, February 19: A 29-year-old teacher at a private school in Palayamkottai, Tamil Nadu, has been arrested on charges of sexually harassing minor female students.
The accused, identified as Jobin Solomon, had been teaching mathematics to students in grades 9, 10, and 11 for the past three years.
The case came to light following complaints regarding his alleged inappropriate behavior towards students both inside and outside the classroom.
According to police sources, several students reported that the teacher exhibited inappropriate conduct during class. The complaints indicated that the students felt uncomfortable for extended periods due to his actions.
It is also alleged that he obtained the phone numbers of female students through a WhatsApp group created for school-related activities.
Investigators revealed that the accused would send late-night messages to the students, and when they resisted, he threatened them into silence.
Reports indicate that the matter was uncovered when parents and school officials became aware of the situation.
Upon confirmation of the allegations, the school management filed a complaint at the Akhil Women Police Station in Palayamkottai.
Based on the complaint, police initiated an investigation and recorded statements from students and relevant witnesses. Police officials stated that the inquiry revealed the alleged harassment had been ongoing for over three months.
Based on the findings, a case was registered against Solomon under the relevant sections of the POCSO Act, which pertains to sexual offenses against minors.
He was subsequently arrested and presented before a judicial magistrate, who remanded him to judicial custody pending further investigation.
Police officials emphasized that offenses under the POCSO Act are taken very seriously and urged parents and students to report any inappropriate behavior without fear.
Further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the allegations and whether there may be additional victims involved.
