Kolkata, August 3: Bangladeshi writer and activist Taslima Nasreen, who returned to Kolkata after two decades, recently commented on India-Bangladesh relations. In response, West Bengal BJP minister Dilip Ghosh stated that India’s partition should never have occurred. He emphasized that the decisions made by the government at that time were for political gain, and the consequences are still being felt today.
During a discussion on Sunday, Nasreen expressed her hope for continued positive relations between India and Bangladesh. She referenced the 1971 liberation struggle, highlighting India’s significant role in aiding Bangladesh’s independence. She noted that India provided refuge, weapons, and ultimately engaged in combat to help liberate Bangladesh, a gesture that the Bangladeshi people continue to remember. However, she criticized certain Pakistani extremists who perpetuate hostility towards India.
In response to Nasreen’s remarks, Ghosh remarked, “We also wish that India’s partition had never happened, as it has brought no benefit to anyone. Today, we spend billions securing thousands of kilometers of borders due to ongoing conflicts. The damage caused by disputes among these countries is unprecedented globally. We are still facing the repercussions of decisions made for political advantage back then.”
Regarding a recent protest in Parliament led by MP Pappu Yadav, who wore saffron attire, Ghosh condemned the act, claiming it disrespected the Ramayana and Lord Ram. He asserted that society would not accept such actions and that legal measures are being pursued.
On former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s comments about a “Plan B,” Ghosh sarcastically questioned the existence of any plans, stating, “What is Plan A, Plan B, or Plan C? Just wait and see what the plan is. If the party does not exist, what use is any plan?”
