ISRO Set to Launch EOS-05 Satellite for Enhanced Weather and Disaster Monitoring

Bengaluru, September 3: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is scheduled to launch the EOS-05 Earth Observation Satellite on September 4 at 2:55 AM from the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR. This mission will place EOS-05 into a sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit.

The GSAT-17 mission marks the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) and will carry EOS-05, which is touted as India’s first imaging satellite in geosynchronous orbit.

Dr. B.R. Guruprasad, former ISRO scientist and director of the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, explained to a news agency, “There are three components involved. One is the GSAT-17, which is the mission name. Here, we have two other components. One is the launch vehicle, which is a 17-story rocket, the tallest rocket India has ever built.”

He further elaborated that the satellite launch vehicle is referred to as the rocket. The second component is the EOS-05 satellite itself, which is a geostationary imaging satellite. Thus, we have the mission, the vehicle, and the satellite.

Dr. Guruprasad noted, “India has already developed dozens of Earth observation satellites, such as our earlier IRS missions.”

The EOS-05 satellite will monitor the Earth from an orbit approximately 30,000 kilometers high. Its capabilities are substantial. This is the 19th flight of the GSLV, which previously launched NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) in July 2025. The rocket is equipped with four liquid strap-on boosters in its first stage, liquid propulsion in the second stage, and cryogenic technology in the third stage. The satellite will be housed in a heat shield during launch.
