Mumbai, September 3: A video showing an incident involving a cyclist near Sindoor Bridge in South Mumbai has gone viral on social media. Following the video’s release, the Mumbai police have initiated disciplinary action against the traffic constable involved.
The police reported that the incident occurred at a junction where heavy traffic during peak hours often leads to road closures. To manage safety and traffic, barricades are placed, preventing any vehicles from making left, right, or U-turns.
According to police, a VIP vehicle was approaching the route at the time of the incident. Members of the Special Protection Unit (SPU) began to remove the barricades to allow the VIP vehicle to pass. During this, the traffic constable also assisted in moving the barricades.
Meanwhile, a cyclist approached the area with heavy cargo on the carrier of his bicycle. The police stated that as the constable attempted to stop the cyclist from proceeding, he lifted the front wheel of the bicycle. Due to the weight of the cargo, the bicycle lost balance and toppled over. Someone recorded the entire incident, which has since gone viral.
Police sources indicated that the constable appeared to be at fault based on the initial review of the video. The Mumbai police have taken this matter seriously and have begun disciplinary proceedings against the constable.
According to police sources, the constable was stationed in the Paydhuni traffic division at the time of the incident. He has since been removed from that position and is currently off traffic duty.
The Mumbai police stated that an investigation is underway based on the viral video, and departmental action against the involved officer is ongoing. They emphasized that such behavior will not be tolerated.
In the meantime, Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora criticized the incident on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “No matter who the VIP is, pushing a cyclist on his way to work is absolutely wrong. Every citizen deserves respect. Mumbai police and traffic police, please take strict action to ensure this does not happen again.”
