Chennai, February 17: The Tamil Nadu Assembly’s interim budget session will continue until February 20, as decided in a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) chaired by Speaker M. Appavu.
Earlier this week, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu presented the interim budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 in the assembly. This budget is particularly significant as it comes ahead of upcoming assembly elections, enhancing its political relevance.
Immediately following the finance minister’s address, Agriculture Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam introduced the interim agricultural budget for 2026-27, outlining the government’s priorities for the agricultural sector.
This separate agricultural budget, presented by the DMK government, focuses on strengthening agricultural infrastructure, expanding irrigation support, promoting mechanization, and enhancing farmer welfare schemes.
After both budget presentations, the Speaker convened a BAC meeting to schedule further proceedings. It was decided that the interim budget session would last until February 20.
According to the agenda set during the meeting, a general discussion on the interim budget will take place over two days (February 18 and 19). Members from both the ruling party and the opposition are expected to participate in this debate, raising issues related to fiscal management, allocations for welfare schemes, regional spending, and promises made in the election year.
The interim budget, presented before the assembly elections, is expected to focus more on continuing existing major schemes rather than implementing significant new policy initiatives, ensuring financial stability. The proceedings over the next three days are likely to feature in-depth discussions, reflecting the political climate leading up to the elections. As the session concludes on February 20, all eyes will be on how the government defends its fiscal strategy and welfare commitments in this election year.
