New Delhi, March 18: A message claiming that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has suspended its KYC (Know Your Customer) process under the directives of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is going viral on social media and messaging platforms. The message warns that SIM cards will be blocked within 24 hours. However, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has clarified that this notice is entirely false.
The PIB’s fact-checking team posted on the social media platform X, stating that no such notice has been issued by BSNL or TRAI. They cautioned the public that these messages are completely fabricated and aim to mislead individuals.
According to PIB, BSNL does not send such KYC suspension notices via SMS or social media. Furthermore, no customer’s mobile connection can be arbitrarily blocked in the name of KYC.
Experts indicate that cyber fraudsters often exploit the names of telecom companies to send these fake messages. They instill fear by threatening users with SIM deactivation, prompting them to act hastily.
The primary goal of these scammers is to trick users into clicking on suspicious links, sharing their OTP, or providing sensitive information such as Aadhaar numbers, bank details, and login credentials. Once they obtain this information, fraudsters can easily commit banking fraud.
In such cases, caution is the best defense. Avoid clicking on unknown links, whether received via SMS, WhatsApp, or email. Never share OTPs or KYC documents through phone calls or unofficial links.
If you receive such a message, verify its authenticity through BSNL’s official website or customer service center. Additionally, fraudulent messages can be reported to the cybercrime helpline or the official portal cybercrime.gov.in.
Government agencies are continuously raising awareness about these fake messages, but it is crucial for users to remain vigilant. A moment of carelessness can lead to significant losses, so ignore any suspicious messages and keep your personal information secure.
