Chennai, March 10: The AIADMK and BJP are nearing the finalization of their seat-sharing arrangement for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Reports suggest that the BJP is expected to contest 29 seats as part of the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Although formal discussions among coalition partners have not yet commenced, sources from both AIADMK and BJP indicate that an informal framework for seat distribution has already been established.
According to information available, the BJP may be allocated 29 constituencies, while the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) could receive around 18 seats. Additionally, TTV Dhinakaran’s Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) is anticipated to be allotted nine seats under the coalition formula.
A senior AIADMK leader confirmed that both parties have broadly agreed on the framework, stating that official talks are likely to occur after Prime Minister Modi’s rally in Tiruchirappalli on March 11.
The AIADMK leader mentioned, “Formal discussions on seat sharing are expected to take place on March 14 after the rally.” Earlier in the negotiations, Union Minister Piyush Goyal had initially requested around 60 seats for the BJP but later reduced the demand to 30.
To persuade the BJP to agree on 29 seats, AIADMK leaders assured their coalition partners that they would receive constituencies deemed favorable for their electoral prospects.
AIADMK sources also cited ongoing efforts by the BJP to include actor-politician Vijay’s TVK party in the NDA as a reason for the delay in finalizing the seat-sharing arrangement.
If these efforts succeed, adjustments may be necessary in the seat allocation among the current coalition partners. Currently, the AIADMK aims to contest approximately 170 seats in the 234-member Assembly.
While the AMMK has reportedly demanded 13 constituencies, the AIADMK leadership has proposed the allocation of nine seats, including Sholingur, Andipatti, Ottapidaram, Nanguneri, Pudukkottai, Harur, Melur, Papanasam, and Musiri.
Under the proposed formula, smaller coalition partners are also expected to receive limited representation. Parties like GK Vasan’s Tamil Manila Congress, B. John Pandian’s Tamizha Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, and T. R. Parivendhar’s India Jananayaga Katchi are likely to be allocated two seats each.
Coalition leaders are also discussing whether smaller parties should contest under the AIADMK’s ‘Two Leaves’ symbol to enhance their chances of victory. However, it is believed that the BJP prefers to field candidates under its ‘Lotus’ symbol.
Final decisions on these matters will be made during formal discussions among coalition partners.
