Tamil Nadu DGP Cancels Leave for Police Ahead of May 4 Counting

Chennai, April 29: The Director General of Police (DGP) of Tamil Nadu has ordered the cancellation of all police personnel leaves starting May 2, ahead of the assembly election counting scheduled for May 4.

This directive applies to officers across all ranks, from constables to senior officials. The aim is to ensure maximum deployment of forces to maintain law and order during the counting process.

Senior police officials have stated that extensive security arrangements are being made at counting centers, with additional personnel deployed to sensitive and vulnerable areas across the state.

Given the significance of the counting process and the need for strict monitoring, no police officer will be permitted to take leave during this period. However, officials clarified that those on leave for valid and unavoidable reasons, such as medical emergencies, maternity leave, childcare responsibilities, or educational commitments, will be exempt from this directive.

This measure is part of a broader effort by the state administration to ensure that the counting of votes proceeds smoothly and without disruption.

Police presence will be increased not only at counting centers but also in surrounding areas to manage crowds and prevent any potential law and order issues following the announcement of results.

The Tamil Nadu assembly elections were completed peacefully on April 23, with voting held in a single phase across all constituencies. After voting concluded, the electronic voting machines (EVMs) were securely transported to designated counting centers under strict supervision.

Officials have reported that a multi-layered security arrangement, including CCTV monitoring, armed police personnel, and restricted access areas, has been established to ensure the security and integrity of the EVMs until counting day.

Preparations for the counting on May 4 are progressing rapidly, with coordination among police, election officials, and district administrations. Measures such as route planning, crowd control, and emergency response systems are being finalized to ensure that the counting process and subsequent announcement of results occur peacefully and orderly throughout Tamil Nadu.
