Chennai, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will lead a high-level meeting in Chennai on Monday afternoon to review Tamil Nadu‘s preparations for the Northeast Monsoon. This meeting aims to evaluate the measures being taken to minimize loss of life and property during the rainy season.
The Northeast Monsoon, which typically occurs from October to December, contributes significantly to the state’s annual rainfall. During this period, coastal and delta districts face heightened risks of cyclones, flooding, waterlogging, and damage to public infrastructure.
Every year, the government undertakes precautionary measures before the onset of the monsoon. The review meeting will include ministers, senior officials, and representatives from key departments. Collectors from coastal and delta districts will participate via video conferencing, providing updates on preparations completed in their areas and highlighting regions requiring immediate attention.
Discussions will focus on coordinated actions among the revenue, disaster management, health, electricity, and transport departments. Officials are expected to present details on district-level emergency plans, manpower availability, and measures implemented to ensure rapid response during heavy rain, flooding, or cyclonic weather.
The Chief Minister may instruct officials to keep rescue personnel, boats, pumps, emergency vehicles, and other essential equipment ready for deployment. Rescue teams could be pre-positioned in areas at risk of flooding, landslides, or isolation following heavy rains.
The meeting will also review arrangements at relief centers, ensuring uninterrupted electricity, safe drinking water, food, medicines, sanitation, and other basic facilities. Departments may be directed to identify suitable buildings for accommodating those relocated from low-lying and high-risk areas.
Preparatory tasks, such as clearing silt from reservoirs, water channels, and drainage networks, are also expected to be discussed. The government might call for the swift removal of water hyacinth, other obstructions, and encroachments that could hinder the flow of rainwater and exacerbate flooding.
Officials will be instructed to identify damaged power poles, transmission towers, and other vulnerable infrastructure, ensuring prompt repairs. The Chief Minister is anticipated to issue department-specific directives, set deadlines for unfinished work, and urge district administrations to maintain close coordination and round-the-clock monitoring throughout the monsoon season.
