Kenya Mandates Travel Health Insurance for Foreign Visitors

Kenya requires travel health insurance for foreign visitors. The Indian High Commission urges citizens to comply with the new regulations.

Nairobi, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Kenya has made travel health insurance mandatory for all foreign visitors staying for less than 12 months. The Indian High Commission in Nairobi has issued an advisory regarding this new requirement. The commission has urged its citizens to ensure they comply when entering the country.

According to the advisory, the Kenyan government implemented this mandatory inbound travel health insurance for foreign nationals entering on or after October 5, 2026. Some exemptions may apply.

Indian citizens are advised to obtain the necessary travel health insurance before their arrival, regardless of when their Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) was issued or when their travel arrangements were made.

The advisory includes a link for ETA applicants, specifying that those with a valid ETA must follow a different link. It also clarifies that existing international travel or medical insurance policies do not fulfill the new insurance requirement.

This announcement follows a recent incident in Kenya, where a person died from Ebola after returning from travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. This prompted the government to enhance its health safety measures. As part of the new regulations, international travelers must purchase insurance online when applying for the Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). The insurance costs $44, excluding applicable payment gateway fees, bringing the total to approximately $52 per person.
