Jammu Prisons to Enhance Food Quality for Inmates with New Menu

Jammu prisons implement a new food plan to improve nutrition and meal quality for inmates, including diverse options like dals and eggs.

Jammu, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : In Jammu, a significant initiative is underway to improve the quality and nutritional value of meals provided to inmates. The Jammu and Kashmir administration is rolling out a food procurement scheme worth ₹8.50 crore aimed at enhancing the dining experience in local prisons.

This reform, spearheaded by the Director General of Prisons, Deepak Kumar, will initially be implemented in two major jails in Jammu district. Following its success, similar improvements will be extended to other significant prisons across the Union Territory.

The Jammu and Kashmir Prisons Department has introduced this ₹8.50 crore scheme to elevate the standards of food served to inmates. Reports indicate that the Central Jail Kot Bhalwal and the District Jail Jammu will be the first to benefit from this initiative.

The revamped dietary plan will feature a variety of lentils, milk, vegetables, dried fruits, dates, and eggs. Additionally, traditional Kashmiri dishes such as haak and nadru will be included in the menu. For those who consume meat, mutton will also be available.

The goal of this initiative is to provide a more balanced and diverse diet, focusing on nutritional needs and food quality. DG Kumar emphasizes the importance of ensuring that inmates do not suffer from any nutritional deficiencies during their incarceration. The allocated ₹8.50 crore will facilitate the supply of essential food items.

The Jammu and Kashmir Prisons Department is committed to offering rehabilitative services in a conducive environment for inmates. Currently, there are 14 operational jails in Jammu and Kashmir, comprising two central jails, ten district jails, one special jail, and one sub-jail. While the department has a total capacity of 3,629 inmates, over 5,300 are currently housed within these facilities.

Additionally, the department oversees the Institute of Correctional Services located in Mishriwala, which provides basic and refresher training related to jail management. A holding center is also under the department’s jurisdiction.

Recently, the Jammu and Kashmir government notified the Jail Manual 2022 to enhance the management and operation of prisons in the Union Territory. This new manual is based on the model prison manual, aiming to modernize the framework governing prison operations.
