Heavy Rainfall Forecast for 21 Districts in Tamil Nadu, Chennai to Experience Thunderstorms
Tamil Nadu is set for heavy rainfall across 21 districts, with Chennai expected to see thunderstorms and lightning this week.

Chennai, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across 21 districts in Tamil Nadu, as a low-pressure area over the northern Andaman Sea is influencing weather conditions throughout the state.
Districts such as Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Dindigul, Pudukkottai, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, and Tiruvannamalai are expected to experience significant rainfall. Similar weather is anticipated in Sivaganga, Thanjavur, Madurai, Cuddalore, Tirupattur, Vellore, and Tiruchirappalli. Residents in low-lying and vulnerable areas are advised to remain vigilant during heavy downpours.
The forecasted change in weather is attributed to the low-pressure system over the northern Andaman Sea, which is expected to bring substantial rainfall to various parts of Tamil Nadu, with some districts likely to experience intense showers for brief periods.
On Tuesday, light to moderate rain is expected in districts near the Western Ghats. As this weather system progresses, cloudy conditions and intermittent rain are likely in some interior and coastal areas.
In Chennai, light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is anticipated. The sky will likely be partly cloudy, with sudden rain possible in one or two areas of the city and its surroundings. Moderate rainfall is also forecast for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and Ranipet districts on September 23 and 24.
The rain is expected to provide some relief from the humid heat currently affecting the northern coastal regions. Authorities have advised fishermen and residents near water bodies to stay updated on weather reports. Drivers are also urged to exercise caution, as rain may lead to water accumulation on roads and reduced visibility.
Officials are expected to monitor sensitive areas closely and prepare emergency response teams in case of heavy rainfall. They have been instructed to ensure that stormwater drains are clear and that pumping equipment is available in areas prone to flooding. The meteorological department has noted that rainfall intensity may vary across different locations and has advised the public to heed official alerts, avoiding shelter under trees or weak structures during storms.
