Tamil Nadu BJP Criticizes DMK Government Over Iran-Supporting Protests, Calls for Central Intervention

Chennai, March 3: The Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a sharp attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government on Tuesday. The party accused the state government of allowing protests in support of Iran, despite a security alert issued by the central government.

BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad stated that the DMK government permitted its allied parties, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and leftist groups, to hold demonstrations on March 1 in Chennai against attacks on Iran by the U.S. and Israel.

Reports indicate that protesters attempted to march towards the U.S. consulate located in the city. The BJP claimed these protests occurred while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was visiting Tamil Nadu, and just a day after the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a warning to states to remain vigilant due to rising tensions in West Asia.

Prasad emphasized, “The stance of the Indian government represents 1.4 billion Indians. No regional party can undermine national unity for electoral gain.” He alleged that such protests could disrupt communal harmony and law and order in the state.

The BJP leader accused VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan and leftist parties of exhibiting “selective outrage,” stating they remain silent on issues concerning Indians and Hindus abroad but are vocal against attacks on Iran. He described this as an example of “vote-bank politics.”

The BJP also urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to issue clear directives to Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, and Director General of Police to ensure strict adherence to law and order.

However, the DMK and its allied parties have not officially responded to the BJP’s recent allegations. Leaders of the ruling coalition have previously defended their right to protest democratically on international issues, asserting that peaceful demonstrations are part of political expression.

This controversy arises amidst heightened global tensions following military developments in West Asia, with security advisories issued in several Indian states.
