Indian Boxers Shine at World Boxing Futures Cup, Five Reach Semifinals

Bangkok, March 13: Indian boxers continue to impress at the ‘World Boxing Futures Cup 2026’. The young Indian boxing team showcased their talent on Friday, securing five medals in the quarterfinals. Gunjan, Joyshree Devi, Ambecker Mitei, Chandrika Pujari, and Radhamani Longjam have all advanced to the semifinals.

The day began on a high note for India. Gunjan (48 kg) achieved a stunning 5-0 unanimous victory over Azerbaijan’s Gular Huseynova. Meanwhile, Joyshree Devi (54 kg) dominated Japan’s Yura Kanemaru, winning by ‘Referee Stopped Contest’ (RSC) in the first round.

In the men’s 50 kg category, Ambecker Mitei also progressed with a 4-1 win against Japan’s Akira Uekubo. Chandrika Pujari (51 kg) defeated Spain’s Andrea Buelga Garcia by RSC in the second round, while Radhamani Longjam (57 kg) secured a 4-1 victory over England’s Siobhan Hely.

However, Sahil Duhan (60 kg) faced a setback, losing 1-4 to France’s David Harutyunyan.

With five boxers reaching the semifinals, India has guaranteed at least five medals in the tournament. This event features promising young boxers from around the world competing in the ‘Youth Olympic’ weight categories. Taking place in Bangkok from March 8 to 15, the World Boxing Futures Cup serves as a crucial development platform for young athletes, providing them with invaluable international experience as they prepare for future global competitions.

The Indian team aims to secure gold medals in the upcoming matches. On Thursday, Indian boxers also performed exceptionally well, with Gunjan, Radhamani Longjam, and Chandrika winning their bouts. Gunjan defeated a Polish boxer 5-0, while Longjam showcased an impressive performance, winning by RSC against her Ecuadorian opponent in the first round.
