Tamenglong Celebrates International Womens Day with ASMITA League Sports and Free Health Camp

Imphal, March 8: On March 7, a vibrant and empowering event was held in Tamenglong, commemorating International Women’s Day. The occasion marked the successful launch of the nationwide ASMITA League, a significant sports initiative aimed at encouraging girls and women in rural areas to actively participate in athletics.

The ASMITA League aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of empowering women through sports and promoting it as a viable career option. This event was organized through a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, MY Bharat, the Socio-Economic Action Trust (Tamenglong Branch), the Khelo India Center, and the District Youth Affairs and Sports Office. The league aims to boost women’s confidence, bring them onto the track, and identify sporting talents, with events taking place simultaneously at over 250 locations across the country. In Tamenglong, the event uniquely blended women’s empowerment with health awareness.

The program commenced with a prayer by Mrs. Ajin Barium and a musical performance by the Soihyum Self Help Group (SHG). Miss Guikhanliu Malingmei hosted the event. The chief guest, Tamenglong District Youth Officer Chunthuingam Dangmei, highlighted the importance of sports in his keynote speech. He urged young girls not to view athletics merely as a hobby but as a pathway to empowerment and potential careers. He emphasized that sports not only enhance physical health but also foster mental strength and self-reliance.

A special talk session on women’s empowerment featured Mrs. Aning R. Panmei, Sunday School In-Charge at the Tamenglong Baptist Church. She underscored the critical role of women in the local community, stating that they are the foundation of families, societies, and nations, and that their participation strengthens the community.

Prioritizing health, the organizers set up a free AYUSH health camp on-site, where participants received consultations and screenings related to Ayurveda, yoga, and other traditional medicine practices. This initiative was taken to ensure the overall well-being of women.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Mrs. Asongdin Kamei of the Socio-Economic Action Trust, followed by a closing prayer led by Mrs. Difunalieu Pamei. After the formal program, the highlight was the athletic races, where local girls enthusiastically participated in 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400 meters sprints across three age categories: under-13, 13-18 years, and over 18 years. In addition to the competitions, team-building activities like tug-of-war and local dance performances added to the lively atmosphere.
