Damascus, April 5: Syrian authorities have announced the temporary closure of a key border crossing with Lebanon, Jdeidet Yabous, due to security concerns following warnings of potential Israeli attacks in the region.
The Ground, Maritime Border, and Crossing Authority stated on Saturday that the Jdeidet Yabous crossing, located opposite the Masnaa crossing in Lebanon, is designated solely for civilian use and not for any military purposes.
The authority emphasized, “No armed groups or militias are present at the crossing, and it is not used for any activities outside the civilian and legal framework.”
Traffic will resume once the situation stabilizes, according to the authority.
This announcement comes after the Israeli military indicated it might target the road leading to the Masnaa crossing, alleging that Hezbollah utilizes this route for military operations, as reported by the Xinhua News Agency.
Tensions remain high at the border amid ongoing regional conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
On March 31, Syria’s interim president, Ahmad al-Shara, stated that Syria would remain distant from any conflict unless directly targeted. He emphasized the need to focus on rebuilding the country after years of war.
Speaking at an event organized by the Chatham House think tank in London, al-Shara remarked, “No one is willing to engage in war. We will not enter into conflict unless we are attacked and have no diplomatic solution.”
He outlined the government’s priorities as stabilizing the economy, rebuilding infrastructure, and ensuring the return of displaced citizens.
“We have endured much war and have paid a heavy price. We are not prepared to experience another conflict. Those who have lived through war understand the value of peace.”
