Gunfire Erupts Near Israeli Consulate in Istanbul, Governor Reports Attackers Armed with Rifles

Istanbul, April 7: Gunfire erupted near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday. Local media reports indicate that several individuals arrived armed with guns and began firing indiscriminately. The police responded with gunfire as well.

The area has been cordoned off, and a significant number of police units have been dispatched to the scene.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gul stated, “One terrorist was killed, and two others were injured. Thanks to the actions taken by our police, the damage was minimized. Efforts to identify the deceased are ongoing. This was an act that seems to have been provoked.”

Earlier, Istanbul police reported that three suspects had been killed. According to Reuters, three attackers were shot dead, while local media groups reported two fatalities. Additionally, two police officers sustained injuries during the incident.

Broadcaster NTV reported that one gunman was captured in a wounded state, while another was killed. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the suspects fired at police officers stationed near the building, which is located in a prominent business hub that houses major Turkish banks.

It remains unclear whether the attackers specifically targeted the consulate.

The governor mentioned that the assailants used rifles and guns to attack the Israeli consulate. Minister Akin Gurlek stated that an investigation is underway, and the attackers’ motives have yet to be determined.

Security around the Israeli consulate in Istanbul is generally robust.

This shooting incident occurs amid heightened tensions between Israel and the U.S. with Iran, a conflict that has shaken the entire Gulf region and impacted global energy supplies.

On February 28, the U.S. and Israel launched missiles at Iran, a situation that U.S. President Donald Trump now seeks to de-escalate, giving the Iranians a deadline until “Tuesday night at 8 PM (Washington time, 5:30 AM Wednesday in India).”
