Mumbai, May 27: Former Union Minister Swami Chinmayanand Saraswati has donated over ₹550 crore worth of assets to the state government for the establishment of Swami Shukdevanand University in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He stated that this donation aims to enhance education and create new opportunities for the youth.
Swami Chinmayanand, who is also the head of Swami Shukdevanand Degree College and Mumukshu Ashram, emphasized that Swami Shukdevanand dedicated his life to strengthening the education system in Shahjahanpur. Education in this region began with very limited resources, and students previously had to travel to Lucknow, Bareilly, or Delhi for higher education.
In a media interaction, he recounted that in the 1940s, Shukdevanand established a Gurukul, followed by an intermediate college in 1952 and a degree college in 1964. His vision was to create a center for higher education in Shahjahanpur, eliminating the need for students to leave the district. At that time, educational opportunities were scarce, and students faced numerous challenges.
Swami Chinmayanand noted that education gradually expanded, leading to the establishment of several colleges, many of which are government-run. However, the absence of a university was still felt. He mentioned that there had been a long-standing demand for a university in Shahjahanpur to strengthen higher education further.
Following a meeting with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in 2018, efforts to establish the university gained momentum. Subsequently, land was sought, and the Mumukshu Ashram campus was chosen for this purpose. The land and assets have now been officially transferred for the university’s establishment.
He clarified that his intention is not for personal gain but for the development of society and education. This donation of approximately ₹550 crore is aimed at shaping the futures of thousands of students. According to him, this initiative is a significant gift for future generations.
He also highlighted that quality and organized education is crucial for a developed nation. Strong education will empower youth and advance society. He emphasized that this is not merely a donation of land or assets but an investment in the future of education.
During the event, he reminded attendees that the dream of establishing a university has been long-standing, and it is finally coming to fruition. He expressed gratitude to the government and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for their support in making this dream a reality. He hopes that this university will soon become a major educational hub for the entire region.
