Tripura Police Seizes Major Methamphetamine Haul, Arrests Suspected Drug Trafficker

Agartala, June 29: In a significant drug bust, Tripura police seized methamphetamine tablets worth over ₹7.5 crore on Monday and arrested a suspected drug trafficker.

According to senior police officials, the seizure occurred during routine checks when authorities stopped a suspicious vehicle in the Damchara area of North Tripura district, which borders the hilly state of Mizoram.

With the presence of an executive magistrate and forensic experts, police conducted a thorough search of the vehicle. They discovered 15 packets containing 150,000 methamphetamine tablets. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is approximately ₹7.5 crore.

The driver, identified as Anup Nuniya from Silcori in Cachar district of southern Assam, was arrested on charges of drug trafficking.

Police claim that this operation marks one of the largest drug seizures by Tripura police in recent times. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend all individuals connected to the drug trafficking network.

Officials stated that the North Tripura district police are fully committed to combating drug trafficking and other organized crimes by strictly enforcing the law and coordinating efforts to create a safe, drug-free society.

The Damchara area of North Tripura shares a long inter-state border with the hilly state of Mizoram. Due to its extensive unfenced borders with Myanmar (510 km) and Bangladesh (318 km), northeastern India has become a significant corridor for drug trafficking.

Police suspect that the methamphetamine tablets were smuggled from Myanmar through Mizoram into Tripura, with plans to further distribute them to Bangladesh or other locations. Tripura shares an 856-kilometer international border with Bangladesh, making it particularly vulnerable to cross-border migration and illegal trade activities.
