New Delhi, 2 January. The year 2026 is set to witness the Supreme Court hearing several important and sensitive cases. The outcomes of these cases are eagerly awaited as they hold significant implications for society, the environment, and ordinary citizens.
From the rising pollution in Delhi to heinous crimes like acid attacks, from the validity of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) related to electoral processes to the social practice of Talaq-e-Hasan, the Supreme Court will address all these issues during the year.
Overall, the cases scheduled for hearing in 2026 before the Supreme Court are considered crucial not only from a judicial perspective but also for their social and national importance.
Delhi Pollution Case: The severe pollution situation in Delhi-NCR has long been a matter of concern. Despite various government measures and restrictions, air quality has not improved satisfactorily. Expressing displeasure, the Supreme Court has announced it will conduct monthly hearings on this matter to monitor the situation closely and take necessary actions. Regular and ongoing hearings on Delhi pollution cases are planned for 2026.
SIR Case: The validity of decisions related to the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in several states has been challenged in the Supreme Court. The court has fixed dates for hearing petitions filed against SIR in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal. A detailed debate and hearing are expected, which may result in significant rulings on electoral processes and voter lists.
Acid Attack Case: The Supreme Court maintains a strict stance on inhuman offences like acid attacks. During the last hearing on 11 December, the court observed that those involved in acid attacks pose a serious threat to society, citizens, and the rule of law. The court indicated the need for stringent conditions against such offenders. Hearings on this matter will continue in 2026.
Talaq-e-Hasan: This practice allows a Muslim man to end a marriage by pronouncing divorce once every month for three consecutive months. In the previous hearing, the Supreme Court questioned the acceptability of such a practice in a civilised society. An important hearing on this issue is also scheduled in the Supreme Court this year.
Unnao Rape Case: The legal battle involving former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, convicted in the Unnao rape case, is ongoing. The CBI has challenged in the Supreme Court the Delhi High Court’s order granting bail to Sengar on 23 December. Subsequently, the Supreme Court stayed his bail during the hearing of the CBI petition. Further hearings in this case are expected in 2026.
