
Seoul, June 24: Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met with his South Korean counterpart, Choi Hyun, in Seoul on Wednesday. The discussion focused on enhancing cooperation in shipbuilding, trade, investment, defense, technology, clean energy, culture, and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.
Both ministers also explored opportunities for collaboration in startups, fintech, and multilateral platforms.
Following the meeting, Jaishankar expressed on social media platform X, “It was a pleasure to meet Foreign Minister Choi Hyun. Our discussion was based on the outcomes of South Korean President Lee Jae-myung’s recent visit to India. We reviewed cooperation in political, shipbuilding, trade, investment, defense, technology, clean energy, culture, and people-to-people interactions. We also discussed opportunities in startups, fintech, and multilateral forums.”
Choi Hyun noted that President Lee’s visit to India in April last year had accelerated the relationship between India and South Korea. He mentioned that both sides reviewed the swift implementation of decisions made at the last summit regarding trade, investment, and finance, and discussed ways to advance these initiatives.
Choi also highlighted that this week, the Prime Minister’s Office of India is hosting Korea Week, reflecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to addressing challenges faced by companies entering the Indian market. He expressed gratitude for India’s support and announced that a similar roundtable for Indian companies would soon be held in Korea.
During lunch, both ministers engaged in an extensive discussion about global conditions and agreed to respond collectively to the economic impacts arising from the situation in the Middle East. They affirmed their commitment to maintaining close contact.
In his opening remarks, Jaishankar expressed his happiness to return to Seoul and meet with his counterpart, emphasizing the timeliness of the meeting given the recent presidential-level visit. He noted the increasing importance of India-South Korea relations in the current global context.
Jaishankar recalled previous meetings with Choi Hyun in New York, Kuala Lumpur, Washington, at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting, and during the South Korean President’s visit to India.
He stated that it is the responsibility of today’s foreign ministers to advance this relationship and coordinate cooperation across various governmental and economic sectors to develop a more modern and future-oriented partnership. Jaishankar emphasized that the current world demands collaboration among like-minded countries with shared values and mutual trust, and recent high-level meetings have provided guidance in this direction.
