New Delhi, April 6: The Supreme Court is currently hearing a case related to the elections in West Bengal. During the proceedings, the Election Commission’s lawyer referenced a speech made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
He stated that the Chief Minister warned the public that CRPF forces from Uttar Pradesh were coming to beat them, urging them to be prepared. The lawyer presented a video of the entire speech in court to clarify the matter.
SG Tushar Mehta also raised the issue of a judicial officer being surrounded in Malda. He mentioned a video of a female judge speaking with a journalist, expressing that her life was in danger. She requested that if anything were to happen to her, her children should be taken care of. He drew the court’s attention to this alarming incident.
In response, the Election Commission’s lawyer commented that such statements only escalate tensions and worsen the situation.
On the other hand, TMC leader and senior lawyer Kalyan Bandopadhyay pointed out that an opposition candidate mentioned the assassination of the Chief Minister in his speech. He brought this issue to the court’s attention as well.
The Chief Justice made it clear during the hearing that if the state’s machinery fails completely, the court will consider what steps to take. However, considering past incidents in West Bengal, central forces will not be withdrawn from the area. He emphasized that necessary measures would be taken to maintain normalcy.
This hearing is focused on the ongoing electoral atmosphere and security arrangements in West Bengal. The court is carefully listening to all parties’ arguments and monitoring the situation closely.
