Sunetra Pawar to Be Elected NCP Legislative Party Leader in Maharashtra

Mumbai: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will hold a legislative party meeting on Saturday at 2 PM, where Sunetra Pawar, wife of the late Ajit Pawar, is set to be elected as the new leader of the legislative party. Following this, she may take the oath as the Deputy Chief Minister at Lok Bhavan in the evening.

This development comes in the wake of the sudden and untimely demise of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on Wednesday.

State NCP chief Sunil Tatkare informed reporters after meeting the party’s executive president Prafull Patel that the meeting has been called to elect the new leader of the legislative party.

After Sunetra Pawar agreed to take on the new responsibility, the party decided to convene the assembly session on January 31. Currently, she is a member of the Rajya Sabha.

Sunetra Pawar and her son Parth will leave Baramati early Saturday morning for Mumbai to attend the legislative party meeting.

Upon her formal election, Sunil Tatkare will send a formal letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, requesting her inclusion in the state cabinet as Deputy Chief Minister.

Tatkare has written to all party legislators, including 40 assembly members and 9 council members, requesting their presence at the legislative party meeting in the Vidhan Bhavan on Saturday.

Earlier, on Friday morning, a high-level NCP delegation met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss several matters following Ajit Pawar’s demise, including the appointment of the legislative party leader and Deputy Chief Minister.

The delegation included executive president Prafull Patel, state unit chief Sunil Tatkare, ministers Chhagan Bhujbal, Hasan Mushrif, and former minister Dhananjay Munde.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, NCP executive president Prafull Patel said they discussed the appointment of the new leader and Deputy Chief Minister. A legislative party meeting will be called to elect the new leader.

He added that they have informed Fadnavis to take prompt decisions about cabinet portfolios and leadership. The party will finalize its position after consulting all its legislators.

Patel emphasized that the party hopes to decide the way forward by considering the sentiments of its legislators, office bearers, and workers.
