Assam Elections Will Shape the Future: Sarbananda Sonowal

Dibrugarh, April 4: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal intensified the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) election campaign in Upper Assam on Friday. He emphasized that the results of the upcoming assembly elections will determine the future of Assam and the protection of the identity and rights of the Assamese people.

While addressing several rallies in Margherita, Majuli, and Khumtai in support of BJP candidates Sharma, Bhuban Gam, and Chakradhar Gogoi, Sonowal stated that the election on April 9 is not merely a political contest but a pivotal moment for Assam.

At a rally in Margherita, the Union Minister remarked, “This is not just an election; it is a commitment to protect the self-respect, identity, and rights of the people of Assam. Our Assam, our land, our rights—we must advance this cause.”

Referring to the legacy of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukafa, Sonowal stressed that Assam’s identity, culture, and language are deeply intertwined with its historical heritage and must be safeguarded.

Highlighting the achievements of the BJP-led NDA government, he stated that decisive steps have been taken to secure land rights for indigenous people, reclaim occupied land, and preserve the state’s cultural heritage.

The Union Minister further asserted, “Today, Assam stands on the pillars of peace, development, and renewed confidence.”

In a sharp attack on the Congress party, Sonowal accused them of undermining Assam’s social fabric through “vote-bank politics” and claimed they had previously encouraged illegal immigration.

He stated, “Congress has done grave injustice to Assam by compromising the rights of indigenous people and weakening the state’s cultural foundation. The people have not forgotten the oppression during the Assam Movement.”

In Majuli, Sonowal extended his best wishes to the people ahead of Rongali Bihu, highlighting the global cultural significance of the island and its traditions like Raas and Ali-e-Ligang.

Reflecting on his tenure as the former Chief Minister of Assam, he expressed gratitude to the people of Majuli for their support in 2016.

He remarked, “Majuli is like my mother; it has shaped my political journey.”

While campaigning for BJP candidate Bhuban Gam, Sonowal described him as a “simple and honest” leader capable of effectively serving the people.

He also emphasized development initiatives in Majuli, including making it a district, improving governance access, exploring tourism potential, and focusing on women’s empowerment. Reiterating the NDA’s commitment, Sonowal stated that the BJP’s manifesto includes 31 promises based on public opinion, adding, “A strong Assam will make India stronger.”
