Women Entrepreneurs Revive Local Cuisine in Jammu Through Umeed Initiative

Jammu, April 4: In the heart of Jammu, where tradition and culture are deeply woven into daily life, a quiet culinary revival is taking place. This movement is being led by women connected to their heritage.

Under the Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihood Mission’s Umeed scheme, Vandana Sharma from the SHG Durga Mata Group is working to bring back the fading flavors of Dogri cuisine. What began as a small initiative has transformed into a mission to preserve a rich heritage that was slowly disappearing from local kitchens.

Reflecting on her journey, Vandana expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for encouraging women to become financially independent. She credited this vision for inspiring many women like herself to step forward and create their own ventures.

Currently, around 15 women are collaborating with her. Vandana shared how this initiative has not only revived traditional dishes but also created a source of livelihood for local women.

The group has focused on promoting authentic Dogri dishes, which were once the hallmark of the region’s food culture. Popular dishes like ‘Kim’ and ‘Kachaloo’ are winning the hearts and taste buds of the local populace. Their efforts are helping to reintroduce these traditional flavors to the new generation.

Vandana stated, “Our goal is to bring back Jammu’s traditional Dogri cuisine to the people. We are delighted to see them enjoying it.” She further noted that the support received through the Umeed scheme has played a crucial role in facilitating their work and expanding their reach.

As interest in local and indigenous food grows, the women of the group are proving that preserving tradition can also pave the way for empowerment. Through their efforts, they are not just saving recipes; they are restoring identity, creating livelihoods, and strengthening the cultural fabric of Jammu and Kashmir.
