Pakistan Announces Significant Fuel Price Hike: Petrol Up 43%, Diesel Up 55%

Islamabad, April 4: The Pakistani government has announced a substantial increase in fuel prices. According to local media reports, petrol prices have surged by 43%, while high-speed diesel (HSD) prices have risen by 55%.

As reported by Pakistan’s leading newspaper, Dawn, the price of petrol has jumped from 321.17 Pakistani Rupees per liter to 458.41 Rupees. Similarly, the price of HSD has increased from 335.86 Rupees to 520.35 Rupees per liter. Kerosene prices have also seen a rise, increasing by 34.08 Rupees to reach 457.80 Rupees per liter.

To mitigate the impact of rising diesel prices on transportation and freight costs, the government has adjusted petroleum levy rates. The tax on petrol has been raised from 105 Rupees per liter to 160 Rupees, while the tax on diesel has been reduced from 55 Rupees to zero.

In a statement on Thursday night, Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister Ali Parvez Malik stated that these “difficult and responsible” decisions were made after extensive discussions involving the President, Prime Minister, military leadership, and provincial chief ministers.

He emphasized that the aim of these decisions is to limit subsidies to only the most needy, maintain fiscal discipline, and protect the economic stability achieved under international commitments over the past two years.

The Pakistani government has also announced targeted relief measures. Two-wheeler users will receive a subsidy of 100 Rupees per liter, limited to 20 liters per month for three months. Small farmers will receive a one-time subsidy of 1,500 Rupees per acre during the harvest season. Additionally, a subsidy of 100 Rupees per liter will be provided for inter-city and freight transportation reliant on diesel.

Moreover, 80-85% of trains transporting food will receive direct assistance of 70,000 Rupees per month. Large transport vehicles will receive 80,000 Rupees per month, while inter-city public service vehicles will be granted 100,000 Rupees per month in support.
