Hyderabad Police Warns Against Sale of Chemically Ripened Mangoes

Hyderabad, April 4: The Hyderabad Police’s food adulteration monitoring team is closely watching the sale of mangoes ripened with chemicals in the market.

Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, who leads the H-Fast (Food Adulteration Monitoring Team), announced on Friday that legal action is being initiated against those violating regulations.

He urged the public to inspect mangoes before purchasing. Sajjanar warned consumers to be cautious of mangoes with unusual colors, a chemical-like smell, strange taste, or odd spots on the skin. If the color changes when washing with baking soda and water, it indicates potential health hazards.

Individuals with information about adulterated mangoes can report to Dial 100 or the H-Fast helpline at 8712661212.

In a social media post, Sajjanar stated, “The king of fruits is back on our plates, but people must be wary of chemically ripened mangoes. Be cautious of mangoes labeled as organic and verify their authenticity before buying.”

The police commissioner cautioned that some traders prioritize profit over safety, using calcium carbide and other dangerous chemicals to ripen mangoes instead of allowing them to ripen naturally. Purchasing bright, golden mangoes from roadside vendors is akin to inviting illness into one’s home.

Sajjanar explained that naturally ripened mangoes do not have a uniform color, whereas chemically ripened mangoes appear bright yellow on the outside but remain raw and toxic inside. Experts warn that consuming such mangoes can lead to immediate throat irritation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Long-term effects may severely impact the nervous and respiratory systems.

He emphasized that the Hyderabad Police is taking strict action against traders who jeopardize public health. Recently, the police established this monitoring team to enhance food safety and regulatory compliance.
