
Lucknow, April 27: Satish Mahana, the Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, emphasized the long-standing and affectionate ties between India and Nepal, rooted in religious, cultural, and social foundations. He highlighted the media’s responsibility, stating that positive and balanced reporting is essential for democracy.
A 20-member media delegation from Nepal visited the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Monday to meet with Speaker Mahana. During the meeting, Mahana referenced the historical connections between the two nations, noting that India-Nepal relations have been deep and multifaceted for centuries, strengthened by cultural and religious bonds.
He described the media’s role as the fourth pillar of democracy, stressing the importance of verifying facts and truthfulness before presenting any news. Mahana expressed concern over the trend of promoting negative news in the race for higher TRP ratings, asserting that the media’s duty is to provide society with a balanced and positive perspective.
Mahana stated that in a democratic system, both the ruling party and the opposition play equal roles, and the Assembly Speaker is accountable to both. He also mentioned that the Uttar Pradesh Assembly has now evolved into a fully modern and digital entity, operating with transparency and efficiency.
During their visit, the Nepalese delegation toured the Assembly building and observed various sections. Mahana provided detailed insights into the legislative process, law-making procedures, and democratic values. The delegation members asked questions on various topics, which Mahana addressed comprehensively, enlightening them about the intricacies of the law-making process and the Assembly’s operations.
It is noteworthy that this 20-member media delegation from Nepal is currently on a tour of Uttar Pradesh, participating in various programs.
