Beijing, July 28: A significant decision was made during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, currently taking place in Busan, South Korea. The committee approved the expansion of the migratory bird sanctuary boundaries along the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea coasts in China, officially adding the Changshan Archipelago to the World Heritage List. This confirmation comes from the Chinese National Forestry and Grassland Administration.
Notably, this expansion follows a similar extension in 2024, marking another important addition to this heritage site. The move strengthens and integrates the entire network of migratory bird sanctuaries.
The Changshan Archipelago is located in Dalian, Liaoning Province, northeastern China. It serves as the only marine route along the migratory path between East Asia and Australia. For millions of migratory birds crossing the Bohai Sea, this area is a crucial stop for energy replenishment.
The newly included heritage area spans over 4,900 hectares and is rich in biological resources, with more than 140 bird species recorded to date.
