Tehran, July 28: Iran’s main military command, the Khatam al-Anbia Central Headquarters, announced on Tuesday that any country or company accepting compensation from Iran’s frozen assets will be denied passage for their ships through the Hormuz Strait.
A spokesperson for the command dismissed US President Donald Trump’s statement that compensation for damages incurred in the Gulf region would be paid from Iran’s frozen funds.
The spokesperson stated that Iran believes these ships suffered damages due to insecurity caused by US military activities. They noted that the vessels were using a maritime route south of the Hormuz Strait, which Iran considers illegal and unsafe.
The spokesperson emphasized that the Iranian armed forces would prevent all ships from passing through the Hormuz Strait if they accept such compensation.
On Monday, President Trump stated that Iranian funds under US control would be used to compensate for damages to vessels affected during conflicts in the Hormuz Strait.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump clarified that the US would not compensate shipping companies with American funds.
When asked if the US would directly pay companies, Trump replied, “No. We will use Iran’s money to cover the damages they caused.”
He added that, in other words, the Iranian funds under US control would be utilized for compensation. Trump did not specify how much Iranian money is under US control, which shipping companies would receive compensation, or how the payments would be processed.
The President also mentioned that the situation in the Hormuz Strait has improved following US military actions, and indicated ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
Trump remarked that Iran’s entire coast has been devastated, but now the situation in the Hormuz Strait is very good, and discussions are currently taking place. He noted that during negotiations, Iran had called for a halt to attacks, hinting that if no agreement is reached, the US might resort to military action again.
