New Delhi, April 8: Former Indian Ambassador to China, Ashok K. Kantha, commented on the current global situation, stating that China has gained clear advantages amid the ongoing energy crisis and geopolitical tensions.
Speaking to a news agency, Kantha noted that China was better prepared than other major economies to handle the crisis stemming from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Kantha, China’s strategic advantage arises from diversifying its energy supply sources, investing heavily in renewable energy, and implementing extensive electrification programs.
On the topic of currency dynamics, he mentioned that the Chinese yuan has emerged as a significant non-Western currency. However, he clarified that this should not be seen as the end of the petrodollar system, although the yuan’s role in the global financial balance is steadily increasing.
Regarding the recent tensions between the United States and Iran, Kantha remarked that the two-week ceasefire agreement is a positive sign but only a preliminary step.
He emphasized that discussions would take place during this period on pending issues, and if progress is made, the ceasefire could be extended. Kantha added that resolving such complex issues cannot be achieved in a short timeframe.
Discussing Iran’s position, he stated that despite significant losses, Iran has demonstrated that even a relatively weaker nation can challenge powerful countries. He referenced the concept of “asymmetric warfare,” noting that Iran has strategically maintained its position without significant disruption to its oil exports.
Kantha concluded, “It is important to remember that there is a limited agreement on de-escalation in the next two weeks, during which unresolved issues will be discussed. If all goes well, this two-week timeframe may be extended, as it is clear that these issues cannot be resolved quickly to the satisfaction of both the U.S. and Israel on one side and Iran on the other.”
He pointed out that in the current global landscape, every country is trying to present itself as strong to its citizens and the international community, but the reality is far more complex and multi-layered.
