New Delhi, August 7: The monsoon session of Parliament is facing continuous disruptions due to opposition protests. On Friday, the proceedings began amidst chaos. Despite repeated requests for calm, Speaker Om Birla suspended the Lok Sabha session until 12 PM due to the unruly behavior of opposition members.
Opposition MPs have been demanding a response from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the police action against CJP protesters on July 20 and alleged irregularities in donations for the Ayodhya Ram Temple. The opposition raised these issues again on Friday, leading to further disruptions in the house.
As the session commenced at 11 AM, Speaker Om Birla recalled Mahatma Gandhi, stating, “August 9 marks the 84th anniversary of the Quit India Movement. On this day in 1942, our Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, urged the nation with the mantra ‘Do or Die.’ The Quit India Movement symbolizes the unity, indomitable courage, and the struggle based on truth and non-violence against injustice.”
He emphasized that this movement paved the way for decisive public awakening towards independence and infused new energy into the nation’s self-confidence. The assembly paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and the immortal freedom fighters who sacrificed for India’s freedom.
Following this, all members observed two minutes of silence. However, as question hour began, chaos erupted once again.
Speaker Om Birla requested the opposition members to allow the proceedings to continue. He remarked, “Mahatma Gandhi’s contributions are acknowledged not just in India but globally. Therefore, the world draws inspiration from him. To strengthen democracy within the country, let us also take inspiration from him. Engage in discussion, dialogue, and express your views here.”
He further stated, “Question hour is a crucial time. Babasaheb Ambedkar emphasized that strengthening democracy in the country requires discussion and dialogue.”
Despite repeated appeals, Speaker Om Birla pointed out that the conduct of the opposition members was not in line with parliamentary decorum, urging them to reflect on this. He reiterated that the house is meant for discussion and dialogue, especially during question hour.
Nevertheless, the opposition’s uproar continued, leading the Speaker to suspend the proceedings until 12 PM.
