New Delhi, August 7: Congress MP Manickam Tagore has once again submitted a notice for a suspension of business in the Lok Sabha. He is demanding a statement from the Union Home Minister regarding the police action during student protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on July 20, 2026.
In his letter to the Lok Sabha Secretary, Tagore stated, “I seek permission to present a suspension motion to discuss a matter of urgent public importance related to the police action during the student protests on July 20, 2026, at Jantar Mantar. Reports and allegations surrounding this incident have raised serious concerns about the methods and extent of force used to disperse the protesters. It is alleged that police employed batons, pellet guns, tear gas, and water cannons against students, including women, resulting in injuries and widespread public concern. A thorough, fair, and transparent investigation into these allegations is necessary.”
The MP further wrote, “This House has the right to know who authorized the police action and under whose instructions it was carried out. Was the use of force in accordance with the law, established police procedures, and constitutional safeguards related to peaceful assemblies? What measures were employed, including pellet guns, tear gas, water cannons, or other crowd control methods, and under what circumstances? What is the number of students injured, detained, or arrested during the protests, including women? Have there been any complaints regarding police misconduct or excessive use of force, and what actions were taken in response? Will the government order an independent, fair, and timely judicial inquiry into this incident to ascertain the facts and ensure accountability where necessary? What are the reasons for the number of FIRs filed against students in connection with the protests, and what charges have been made?”
Manickam Tagore also questioned, “Will the government immediately withdraw all FIRs filed against students in connection with the protests in Delhi and assure that there will be no police action, criminal prosecution, or any legal pressure regarding peaceful student protests and democratic dissent? Does the government intend to engage with students to address their grievances through dialogue rather than coercive measures? Given the widespread public concern surrounding this incident, if the investigation proves that excessive or unwarranted force was used against peaceful protesters, will the Prime Minister express regret in Parliament and apologize to the students?”
The Congress MP emphasized, “The allegations related to this incident have raised significant public concern and highlighted serious issues regarding constitutional guarantees such as freedom of speech and expression, the right to assemble peacefully, the protection of civil liberties, and public trust in law enforcement agencies. It is the duty of this House to investigate these issues and hold the government accountable. Therefore, I request that the normal proceedings of the House be suspended to allow for an immediate discussion on this matter and to request a detailed statement from the Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding this incident and the actions proposed by the government.”
