Ranchi, August 7: Protests by students in Jharkhand have entered their 14th day, fueled by allegations of irregularities and paper leaks in the JPPSC and JSSC recruitment exams. Hundreds of candidates are currently staging an indefinite sit-in at the Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi. Many students have also resorted to hunger strikes to voice their demands.
The protesters claim that cheating in competitive exams has become rampant in the state. They allege that papers are leaked in advance for wealthy individuals, while hardworking and underprivileged students are forced to take to the streets. Devendra Nath Mahto, a prominent student leader and member of the Jharkhand Democratic Revolutionary Front, stated that there has been no substantial response from the government so far.
He remarked, “We have not received any timeline, date, or concrete information. We are only being assured of discussions, as we have learned from the team. No government official has contacted me yet.”
Mahto expressed concerns that if a thorough investigation occurs, it could expose several influential figures linked to the irregularities, potentially damaging their reputations. “We believe that one of our demands will be met quickly, while the other may take longer. We will end our hunger strike only after our immediate demands are fulfilled. The controversial exams, including the 14th JPPSC, FRO, and others, should be canceled. We also seek a clear timeline for when our demands will be addressed,” he added.
In support of the protests, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, has voiced his backing for the JPPSC-JSSC candidates. Mahto commented, “Everyone should support this protest, as it represents the struggles of distressed students. All political parties, whether BJP, Congress, or Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, should stand with us. Students come from all backgrounds, and this protest highlights the alarming prevalence of paper leaks in Jharkhand.”
Another protesting student, Prem, shared, “I have been on a hunger strike for the past five days. Our student leader Devendra Babu’s health has deteriorated significantly, and his condition is critical. We will continue our hunger strike until our demands are met.”
He further stated, “Our state is facing severe challenges and is in jeopardy. Jobs for local youth are being sold off. Deals are being made in closed hotel rooms. Where will the poor children go, who cannot afford such expenses? This situation is making the rich richer and the poor poorer. This is the worst time for free India.”
