New Delhi, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : Supporters of former Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Sunday, voicing their demands for his release and the withdrawal of nearly 350 criminal cases filed against him. The protest was organized by the Samajwadi Party (SP) and led by Mohammad Arshad Khan, a national secretary of the party and former MLA from Jaunpur.
During the demonstration, Khan alleged that police barred them from peacefully protesting at Jantar Mantar. In response, SP workers staged a symbolic protest outside the Parliament Street police station.
Khan explained that they had received permission for the protest, but police unexpectedly revoked it. Upon arriving, they found the area blocked off with barricades.
He pointed out that despite various conspiracies in 2019, Azam Khan won his election. However, in the following months, around 350 cases were filed against him and his family members. Khan described this as a result of a government conspiracy, claiming that significant injustice was being inflicted upon them.
Additionally, he highlighted concerns regarding the Jawahar University in Rampur, which he asserted was established legitimately. Recently, the Rampur Development Authority issued a notice for the demolition of 38 buildings on the campus, which he deemed unjustified. Khan called for the immediate withdrawal of the demolition notice.
During the protest, SP leaders presented a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister. The memorandum stated, “It is well-known that within just 3-4 months in 2019, nearly 350 criminal cases were filed against Azam Khan, Abdullah Azam Khan, and their family members. The sheer number of cases raises suspicions of political vendetta and administrative misuse. This leads us to question whether these cases are based on actual crimes or are a means of settling political scores.”
Khan further emphasized that the demolition notice from the Rampur Development Authority threatens the future of thousands of students. He insisted that this issue transcends mere structures; it concerns education, research, and the livelihoods of countless families. He urged for an immediate halt to any demolition actions until a final decision is reached.
