Lucknow, March 21: Senior leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), Ravidas Mehrotra, has expressed concerns over the integrity of the Election Commission amid the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal. He stated that the recent transfers of officials by the Commission indicate a lack of commitment to fair elections.
In a conversation in Lucknow, Mehrotra highlighted that the Election Commission recently announced the election dates for West Bengal. However, without the state government’s consent, the Commission transferred the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Home Secretary. He labeled this action as an attack on democracy.
Mehrotra raised questions regarding the Commission’s approach, wondering if similar transfers would occur in other states before their assembly elections. He referred to the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh in 2027, expressing interest in whether the Commission would also transfer high-ranking officials there.
He asserted that the manner in which the DGP and Home Secretary were removed in West Bengal directly undermines democratic processes. Mehrotra accused the Election Commission of desiring elections that lack fairness.
Additionally, he responded to the portrayal of mafia don Atiq Ahmed’s alleged connections with the ISI in the film “Dhurandhar 2.” Mehrotra questioned who conducted the investigation into these claims. He insisted that if an investigation took place, the government should make the report public, noting that Ahmed was not part of the Samajwadi Party at the time of his death.
Mehrotra also commented on the upcoming assembly elections in Assam, alleging that the ruling BJP is attempting to buy opposition leaders to join their party. He cited a recent incident where a Congress MP resigned to join the BJP, followed by his son refusing to contest elections under the Congress banner. He concluded that despite the BJP’s efforts, they would face a significant defeat in Assam.
