Sonia Gandhis Article on Iran Sparks Political Controversy

New Delhi, March 4: Political tensions have escalated following Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s critique of the central government’s silence regarding the alleged targeted killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In her article, Gandhi questions the government’s response to this significant issue. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reacted sharply, labeling her remarks as motivated by vote bank politics.

BJP national spokesperson Tuhin Sinha, in an interview with a news agency, stated that Gandhi’s article reflects her concerns being limited to electoral gains. He emphasized that when and how India should respond to international issues is a matter of foreign policy, determined by the central government.

Sinha raised questions about the previous UPA government’s formal comments during the 2011 assassination of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and the execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in 2006.

He noted that in the past three days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has engaged with eight heads of state amid the Middle East crisis, prioritizing the safety of Indian citizens and efforts to avert war. Sinha asserted that it is not India’s responsibility to issue unnecessary statements on every international event as per Congress’s perspective.

He further stated that the Modi government’s commitment over the past 12 years has been to ensure the safety of Indian citizens and those of Indian origin during emergencies, whether due to war or pandemics like COVID-19. The government is closely monitoring the safety of Indians stranded in Gulf countries and taking necessary actions.

Sinha also pointed out that the Congress party has failed to recognize that India’s foreign policy has evolved from ‘non-alignment’ to a ‘nation-first’ approach. He stressed that in the current context, whether it involves tensions between Iran and Israel or any other global crisis, India’s primary concern is the protection of its citizens and national interests. The exchange of statements between the ruling party and the opposition continues on this issue.
