Social Activist Shalini Ali Critiques Grand Mufti Sheikh Abubakars Controversial Statement on Women

New Delhi, September 3: The controversy surrounding Grand Mufti Sheikh Abubakar Ahmad’s remarks about women is intensifying. Social activist Dr. Shalini Ali has sharply criticized his comments, asserting that women have made significant progress in every field and such remarks should not be made.

In his statement, the Grand Mufti compared women to jewelry kept at home and emphasized their protection. Dr. Ali responded, stating, “First and foremost, we object to the Grand Mufti’s highly inappropriate statement. His claim that women are like jewelry needing protection overlooks the fact that women have always advanced and achieved success—whether on the battlefield, as doctors, or even traveling to the moon and beyond.”

Dr. Ali further argued that such statements are not aligned with religious teachings. She stated, “It is incorrect to say that women are like jewelry and require protection. Neither the Quran mentions this, nor is there any Hadith that suggests limiting their independence under the guise of safety. Those who support such views are also mistaken.”

She emphasized that society should not harbor such notions about women. If there are concerns for their safety, the focus should be on empowering them. Dr. Ali remarked, “If someone believes that women need protection, they should provide it and guide them to become self-sufficient through education. They should inspire women, rather than suggesting that they should not pursue education and that having three children will lead them to paradise. Such statements are utterly absurd and wrong.”

Additionally, Dr. Shalini Ali welcomed the High Court’s decision to transfer the investigation of the Disha Salian rape case to the CBI. She noted, “The initial investigation was marred by controversy, with multiple statements being changed, and even her father retracting his statements. I believe there is a significant need for clarity. If the High Court has decided to hand over this investigation to the CBI, it is a positive development. We should all support this order and contribute to bringing clarity to the situation.”
