Government Eases LPG Booking Rules for Rural Consumers

New Delhi, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian government has announced a significant relief for rural LPG consumers by reducing the minimum interval for rebooking gas cylinders to 25 days. This decision aligns the booking rules for both urban and rural consumers.

Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Tourism, Suresh Gopi, stated that the government made this move after observing considerable improvements in LPG supply and a significant reduction in pending refill bookings.

Previously, during heightened pressure on LPG availability due to the U.S.-Iran conflict and supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, the government had allowed urban consumers to book refills every 25 days, while rural consumers faced a longer wait of 45 days.

In a post on Facebook, Gopi noted, “Considering the improved supply situation and the significant decrease in refill backlog, the central government has lifted this restriction. Now all domestic LPG consumers, whether in urban or rural areas, can book gas cylinders every 25 days.”

The minister also shared a copy of the directive issued by the Ministry of Petroleum to oil marketing companies (OMCs), mandating the immediate implementation of this revised arrangement.

This decision comes at a time when various measures taken by the government during the energy crisis have led to improved LPG availability. Despite global disruptions in oil and gas supply chains, the government has been closely monitoring the situation to ensure domestic demand is met.

In June, the government also lifted restrictions on the supply of commercial LPG. The Ministry of Petroleum instructed OMCs to normalize the supply of non-domestic packed LPG to pre-conflict levels.

Previously, to support industries and commercial establishments, the government permitted the supply of commercial LPG to return to 50% of pre-crisis consumption levels, ensuring that production and business activities were not adversely affected.

Notably, following the U.S.-Israel and Iran-related conflicts in February, which increased pressure on global energy supplies, the government implemented various regulatory measures to secure domestic LPG availability and prevent potential shortages.
