New Delhi, June 10: In today’s fast-paced world, the rising prevalence of obesity, irregular eating habits, and lack of physical activity have led to an increase in snoring issues.

Medical research indicates that snoring occurs when the airway is partially obstructed during sleep. As a person breathes, air must travel through the nose and throat to reach the lungs. Any obstruction in this pathway increases pressure, causing the throat tissues to vibrate, which produces the sound of snoring. The greater the obstruction, the louder the snoring can become.

Experts point out that excess weight is one of the primary causes of snoring. When extra fat accumulates in the body, it does not just affect the abdomen or waist; fat can also build up around the neck, narrowing the airway. During sleep, muscles naturally relax, further obstructing airflow. This explains why individuals with higher body weight often report more frequent snoring.

Alcohol consumption and certain sleep medications can also exacerbate this issue. Medical specialists note that these substances can overly relax the muscles in the throat and airway, leading to a more constricted passage. Consequently, the sound of snoring increases, and in some cases, breathing difficulties may arise.

Nasal issues can also be significant contributors to snoring. If a person suffers from chronic sinus problems, frequent allergies, or persistent nasal inflammation, airflow through the nose can be disrupted. In such cases, individuals may resort to breathing through their mouths, which significantly raises the likelihood of snoring.

Doctors advise that occasional, mild snoring is generally not a cause for concern. However, if snoring occurs nightly, is particularly loud, or is accompanied by other symptoms, it may warrant caution. This is especially true if there are instances of breath cessation during sleep, sudden feelings of suffocation, frequent awakenings, or excessive fatigue upon waking, as these could indicate a more serious condition.

The most serious issue identified in medical research is known as obstructive sleep apnea. In this condition, breathing repeatedly stops for several seconds during sleep. Often, individuals are unaware of this, but their bodies are deprived of adequate oxygen. Prolonged occurrences can lead to increased blood pressure, heart disease, memory issues, and excessive daytime sleepiness.

If snoring is persistent or accompanied by other symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical evaluation.
