
Guwahati, June 10: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms and lightning across various districts in Assam over the next seven days. Officials reported on Wednesday that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in several areas.
According to the regional meteorological center in Guwahati, adverse weather conditions are likely to persist in the western, central, and southern parts of the state from June 10 to June 16.
The IMD has highlighted that districts including Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Barpeta, Tamulpur, Nalbari, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, and Srimanta will experience thunderstorms and heavy to very heavy rainfall on different days during this forecast period.
In western Assam, heavy rainfall is particularly anticipated in districts like Kokrajhar, Chirang, and Baksa, especially between June 11 and June 13. Similar conditions are expected in parts of central Assam, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted.
The weather department has predicted thunderstorms with lightning across most districts in the Brahmaputra Valley. While some areas may not receive warnings at times, widespread rainfall events are expected to continue throughout the week.
In upper Assam, districts such as Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Jorhat, Majuli, and Dibrugarh are likely to see moderate to heavy rainfall, with the possibility of very heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in certain locations.
Southern Assam’s Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Srimanta districts are also at risk for continuous rainfall and thunderstorms. Heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for some areas in Hailakandi and Srimanta for several days.
The Climate Change Department has advised residents, especially those living in vulnerable and low-lying areas, to remain alert and follow official weather updates. The warnings will be valid from 8:30 AM on the scheduled day until 8:30 AM the following day.
