Kolkata, June 10: Police arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor Swapna Samaddar on Wednesday, facing charges of attempted murder and harassment. This action follows a complaint filed at the Narkeldanga police station regarding an incident from 2022.
Swapna Samaddar was apprehended in the Phoolbagan area, marking the total number of TMC councillors arrested from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to ten.
Samaddar represents Ward 56 of KMC and was also associated with the patient welfare committee of the Beleghata ID Hospital.
According to police, a complaint was lodged on May 2, 2022, leading to the current action. A police officer confirmed that the complainant is a woman.
Based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered against Swapna Samaddar under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including attempted murder, harassment, illegal confinement, obstruction of work, intentional injury, property damage, theft, and criminal intimidation.
Allegations suggest that Samaddar was involved in post-election violence following the 2021 state assembly election results. At that time, as TMC was in power, it is believed that his influence prevented any complaints from being filed against him.
Currently, TMC councillors are being arrested one by one as the complainant has now approached the police station to file a complaint.
In recent days, several KMC councillors have been arrested. Bappaditya Dasgupta was detained on Saturday night in Patuli on extortion charges. The following morning, police took councillor Mohammad Jasimuddin into custody from his home in Jorasanko, central Kolkata. He faces charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, for allegedly molesting a minor.
Additionally, Sushmita Bhattacharya, a councillor from Ward 63, and her husband were arrested on Tuesday for extortion.
