Smriti Irani Criticizes Congress Over Womens Reservation Bill Failure

New Delhi, April 18: Senior BJP leader Smriti Irani launched a strong attack on the opposition following the failure of the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill in Parliament. She stated that the Congress Party has never wanted women to receive 33% reservation. In a conversation in New Delhi, she emphasized that the tactics employed by the opposition yesterday clearly indicate their lack of desire to support women’s reservation.

Irani recalled that in 2010, when the opposition was in power, the BJP had supported Congress in the Rajya Sabha. At that time, Congress had a full opportunity to pass the bill. The BJP had made it clear that it would support the legislation. If Congress had truly wanted it, the 33% Women’s Reservation Bill could have been enacted. However, Congress allowed it to become ineffective. Now, in 2023, when the BJP proposed it, Congress immediately called for its implementation. Yet, after two days of BJP discussing its enactment, Congress is now retreating. Irani asserted that the Congress Party lacks faith in providing 33% reservation for women.

Commenting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation, Irani stated that the Prime Minister will outline the government’s direction and future plans. She expressed that their generation has fought for women’s reservation from the streets to Parliament. The passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in 2023 was a moment of great satisfaction for them. They had hoped that all political parties would set aside their differences to pass this provision, ensuring women’s participation in the upcoming Lok Sabha.

Irani also criticized Rahul Gandhi, who appeared overly pleased, stating that he has actually let down the ordinary women of the country. She noted that the BJP will wait until the 2029 Lok Sabha elections to defeat him.

Union Minister Anupriya Patel responded to Rahul Gandhi’s statements in the Lok Sabha, stating that a certain level of seriousness is expected from the opposition leader. However, once again, that seriousness was lacking. This was a crucial opportunity to discuss sensitive issues ensuring justice for half the population, namely the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill. Yet, no meaningful thoughts were presented on this matter.

Patel pointed out that the way the opposition coalition celebrated the failure of the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill revealed their true intentions. It shows they have never wanted to provide proper representation for women in Parliament. When everyone came together to support the passage of this bill, it seemed like there was unanimous support. However, as the time for implementation approached, they backed off. The manner in which they are celebrating is being observed by the women of the country. The strength of women will not be swayed by anyone. They have clearly seen the character of the opposition.
