New Delhi, April 18: The Women’s Reservation Bill, linked to the Constitution’s 131st amendment, was not passed in the Lok Sabha. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari targeted the opposition on Saturday, asserting that they will ensure half of the country’s population receives their rights.
In an interview with a news agency, Tiwari stated, “The Nari Shakti Vandan Act could not be passed in Parliament. The Women’s Reservation Bill was approved in 2023 and passed unanimously with the constitutional amendment. It was brought to the special session of Parliament over the last two days for implementation, which required seat delimitation. However, the opposition blocked it. Those responsible for its failure include Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, TMC, DMK, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP.”
Tiwari expressed disappointment over the bill’s failure, noting, “We were disheartened. PM Modi wanted half of the population to have seats in the Lok Sabha and Assembly, which has been obstructed for the past 40 years. When the bill was rejected, members of the ruling party remained seated for a long time, while the India Alliance celebrated, believing they had succeeded by blocking 33 percent reservation for women.”
He added, “Everyone talks about women’s empowerment, but the opposition does not want to let them advance. At one point, Congress proposed that if you write the 50 percent reservation into the bill, we will pass it. Amit Shah immediately requested the Lok Sabha Speaker to pause proceedings for an hour so we could amend the bill, but the opposition found another excuse to withdraw. The country is watching all of this.”
Tiwari concluded, “The NDA is committed to passing this bill, whether today or tomorrow, given a two-thirds majority. We will ensure that half of the population, especially women, will have a say in this matter. Our bill may have failed, but we are undeterred. We will secure this right very soon.”
