Political Clash Over Womens Reservation Bill Between Kerala Congress and CM Naidu

New Delhi, April 18: The political landscape has intensified over the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill and delimitation issues. A sharp exchange of statements has emerged between the Kerala Congress and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

CM Naidu accused the opposition of obstructing the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill, prompting a response from the Kerala unit of Congress. They accused Naidu of ‘betraying’ Andhra Pradesh and warned that his actions would not be forgotten.

In their response, Congress emphasized that the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill was passed unanimously in 2023 with support from all parties. This statement aimed to refute Naidu’s claim that the opposition was hindering the bill.

Previously, CM Naidu targeted Congress and its allies, stating that they were blocking a historic step towards women’s empowerment. He labeled it a political hurdle and a betrayal of the millions of women deserving equal representation in Parliament.

However, Congress shifted the focus to delimitation, stating that they opposed the Delimitation Bill for the ‘future of the country.’ The opposition believes that if delimitation is based on population, it could diminish the political strength of southern states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala.

While the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill is hailed as a historic step to enhance women’s participation, its association with census and delimitation has complicated the political discourse.

Naidu’s statements are being linked to the ruling coalition’s stance, while Congress attempts to frame the debate around federal balance and regional equality.

The ongoing verbal clash over issues like ‘betrayal’ and ‘representation’ is evolving into a significant national discourse. This discussion extends beyond women’s rights, touching upon the balance of political power in the country.
